Pass the Popcorn! Review of “Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1”

In a recent interview I did with Lloyd Kaufman, among many other things, we talked about Return to Nuke ‘Em High. He mentioned how Quentin Tarantino suggested to make Return to Nuke ‘em High an event film, split in two volumes (just like Kill Bill), and he also talked about incorporating political messages, like LGBT rights, into the movie. The interview was a lots of fun and after that, Mr. Kaufman offered to send me a screener of Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1, which he did, and which I thoroughly enjoyed. Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1 is a real treat for everyone who has a taste for Troma/independent/trash movies.

It wouldn’t be accurate to classify Return to Nuke ‘Em High as a sequel to the original Class of Nuke ‘Em High trilogy, in the opening narration Stan Lee (yes, that Stan Lee) even goes as far as to call it a remake, but the truth lies somewhere in between. Anyway, the premise of the movie is familiar – a bunch of high school students are being exposed to irradiated food which kills some of them and forces some others to mutate in some kind of post-apocalyptic punks/metalheads. In a midst of that mess, an environmentally aware blogger Chrissy (Asta Paredes) and a rich, new girl in school, Lauren (Catherine Corcoran) fall in love with each other.

First of all, Return to Nuke ‘Em High is genuinely funny – it has some well placed, intelligent, though out jokes, and there are also loads of fart jokes and nonsensical, bizarre jokes. Amazingly, both of these categories, which may seem contradictory at first, connect and play out just fine. From a comedic and fun angle (and that’s why most people watch Troma movies), Return to Nuke ‘Em High is more than good – it’s brilliant! It’s a fun, funny, enjoyable, weird, twisted piece of work, just like you expect it to be. The two main leads – Asta Paredes and Catherine Corcoran – work very well as a couple, they have chemistry and are rather sweet to watch. Hopefully, they’ll get more work in the future, and if they’re lucky, maybe even some mainstream recognition. If Emily Ratajowski can land roles in major movies by only showing her boobs and prancing ’round like an idiot, I don’t see why these two couldn’t. Good luck girls!

The practical effects in Return to Nuke ‘Em High are as good as ever, with a little exception of few scenes including CGI effects. I’ve seen people on the internet complain about them, but they are nowhere as repulsive as people make them out to be. Of course, practical effects have more charm to them than CGI effects, but used selectively (like in Return) the CGI effects are not that big of a nuisance. Also, Return to Nuke ‘Em High features the best soundtrack I’ve ever heard in a Troma movie and after watching it, I immediately went to check some of those artists out. Like I said, Return to Nuke ‘Em High is quite enjoyable movie, schlocky in a best possible way and will sure satisfy many classic Troma fans. During the interview with Mr. Kaufman, he said he thinks Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1 & 2 will be the best Troma movies to date. I just might agree with him on the first one, and I can’t wait to watch the second volume!
