Are you a young, enterprising filmmaker? Do you like advice? Do you like your advice laced with profanity? If so, then Lloyd Kaufman’s new book, Produce Your Own Damn Movie, is the perfect resource for you.
Kaufman, head of Troma Studios, chairman of the Independent Film & Television Alliance and erstwhile porn-czar, is the irreverent indie mogul responsible for such B-classics as “The Toxic Avenger†and “Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.†While the book, co-written by New York actress Ashley Wren Collins, may seem like a series of bewildering non-sequitors, it does contain pages of interviews with prominent film producers like ex-Monty-Python Terry Jones, Joe Dante (“Gremlinsâ€) and Mark Harris (“Million Dollar Babyâ€), as well as nuggets of sage advice, such as “Produce what you believe in,†“Don’t compromise,†and “IMDb is ass.â€
The book is loaded with fascinating information about the history of American independent cinema and the political and economic struggles facing indie producers today. If you can get past the profoundly racist “interview†with Kaufman’s Chinese porn alter-ego, Louis Su, or the fact that he refers to all women, including accomplished studio executives, as “gynos,†then you’ll find this a damn informative read.
